Hakuba Rent a Car operates on an advance booking basis. Our branches are not permanently staffed, so if you arrive without a reservation we may not be able to rent to you. To be sure of a vehicle, please book in advance.

Three classes: kei car, compact and minivan. All prices are 24-hour rates, tax included and with third-party insurance.

In winter: 10% off for 3+ days, 20% off for 7+ days. Child seat, junior seat and ski carrier are ¥1,100 each per 24 hours. Rentals of one month or longer are quoted individually.

Hold a provisional reservation

Enter your details to hold the vehicle. At this stage your booking is not yet confirmed.

Pay to confirm

Pay by credit card on the spot, or via the payment link in the automatic confirmation email. Your booking is confirmed once payment is complete.

Collect your vehicle

Bring your original driving licence (and passport for overseas visitors). We check the vehicle together and hand over the keys.

Return the car

Return with a full tank. One-way drop-off between our two branches is available, as is a lift back to your station or accommodation.

Provisional bookings expire after 12 hours

If payment is not received within 12 hours of your provisional booking, it is cancelled automatically. Please complete payment promptly.

Changes and cancellations

To change your dates, vehicle or options — or to cancel — please submit a request from your member page. Cancellation fees follow our terms and conditions.

We accept online credit card payment only. Cash is not accepted. Your reservation is confirmed once payment is complete.

Every vehicle is 4WD

Roads around Hakuba and Otari are mountainous, and snow and ice are a daily reality in winter. Our whole fleet is 4WD, with studded winter tyres fitted as standard from December to March.

Two branches plus shuttle

Pick up at Hakuba Station Branch or Cortina Norikura Branch, drop off at either, and use our shuttle to and from your accommodation or station (¥3,000 one way within Hakuba and Otari).

Everything online

Check availability, hold a booking and pay — all from the booking page. Changes and cancellations can be requested from your member page at any hour.

Set up for overseas visitors

We work in both English and Japanese, and explain exactly what you need — a 1949 Geneva Convention International Driving Permit, or a foreign licence with an official Japanese translation.

Can I rent without a booking?

Hakuba Rent a Car operates on an advance booking basis. Our branches are not permanently staffed, so if you turn up without a reservation we may not be able to rent to you. Please book in advance through the booking page.

How does booking work?

Check availability and rates on the booking page, then hold a provisional reservation. Pay by credit card on the spot or via the payment link in the automatic confirmation email, and your booking is confirmed.

What happens if I don't pay for a provisional booking?

If payment is not received within 12 hours of the provisional booking, it is cancelled automatically. You are welcome to book again, but the vehicle may have been taken by another customer in the meantime.

Which payment methods do you accept?

Online credit card payment only (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX, JCB, Diners). We do not accept cash.

How do I change or cancel a booking?

Submit a request from your member page to change dates, vehicle class or options, or to cancel. Cancellation fees follow our terms and conditions.

Do you have child seats?

Yes — child seats (newborn to around age 4) and junior seats (around age 3 to 12), both ¥1,100 per unit per 24 hours, tax included. Numbers are limited, so please request one when you book.

Are all your vehicles 4WD?

Yes. Every vehicle in our fleet is 4WD, and from December to March studded winter tyres are fitted as standard, so you can drive snowy and icy mountain roads with confidence.

What is the green season campaign?

From April to November, every vehicle class is 40% off: ¥6,600 for a kei car, ¥7,800 for a compact and ¥14,400 for a minivan per 24 hours, tax included. Peak periods such as Golden Week and the Obon summer holidays are excluded.

Can I drop the car off at the other branch?

Yes. You can collect from Hakuba Station Branch and return to Cortina Norikura Branch, or the other way round. Please let us know when you book.

Can overseas visitors rent from you?

Yes — we work in both English and Japanese. To drive you need a Japanese driving licence, an International Driving Permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention, or a licence from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Slovenia, Monaco or Taiwan together with an official Japanese translation.
